LaLa Land
So part of our excuse for being bad bloggers comes from our working LA trip we took a week or so back. It actually feels like we just got back yesterday with all the craziness going on around here. We were lucky enough to have some great friends to crash with, who showed us a good time paired with good food. Score! We introduce the awesomely sweet and creative couple, Sarah and Jesse (along with Joey in this photo):
When met them in NYC a little less than a year ago at a friends 30th birthday and it was love at first sight. When they told us they were moving to LA, it made the insides hurt a little. They are a rare mix of intellect and creativity rolled into a fun a generous pair. We were excited to visit to say the least. Not to mention they have the cutest pup ever (right along side with Porkchop and Rocket of course!) Lilly:
Isn't she a pretty lady?
So, like I said this was a "working" trip. Joey and Jesse had business to attend to while I had a lot of client work I had to to keep on top of. The food and the weekends (and not to mention the weather!) were a sweet relief. We did a little bit of house crashing too...
Sarah, had the awesome idea of a leisurely (and totally legal) house crash session on a sunny Sunday al la open houses around town. Can you guess which house above is owned by the creators of the Gilmore Girls? I couldn't guess myself until I started to notice clues around the home...
Nothing gets past me! Haha. It's the brick house, and though not loved by my posse, I totally loved and got them. It was kinda bed and breakfast + Ripley's thing going on. Not to mention humor in every nook.
Call me a nerd, but I love that show. I actually googled Starts Hollow when we were looking to buy a house.
Something I noticed about LA neighborhoods, they are really clean, and everyone's landscaping is awesome. Plus it seems to be OK to be a little quirky. Check out this roof...
...very Nightmare before Christmas if you ask me.
So yes, food. We ate and we ate, until we couldn't eat anymore. In the morning we headed to the Farmer's Market to get breakfast, aka, an excuse to eat crepes. During the day we mixed in vegetarian treats with "the best burgers and hot dogs".
If you are taking notes, here is what we suggest:
Sage/KindKreme is my #1 pick for vegan/vegetarian food. The Benedicts Breakfast brought me to my knees. I was eating it going "mmmmm" "mmmmm" "mmmm" like a loon.
Find it:
KindKreme/Sage Vegan Bistro
1700 W Sunset Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90026
We went to In and Out Burger, and I dabbled in the secret vegetarian option (not listed on the menu) and it was surprisingly good. We also hit up some famous hot dog joint, I totally don't remember the name of. But I remember how big Joey's dog was and that they offered a veggie dog. It was OK.
We went to Father's Office, which was cool and kind of NY.. I snacked on some fries while Joey was happily eating his steak tar tar and their very popular burger. Honestly I was more interested in peeking in H.D Buttercup's windows, and oddly falling in love with this perfect tree...
It made me think if my best friend in STL who was due any moment, and had nick names her soon to be born daughter, Buttercup. She was born but hours later.
We also scored big in the food department at:
Veggie Grill, where all the meateaters were even happy!
Milk, the dessert bar was OK, but their stuff looks like art and the line is really long, as I feel like maybe we didn't order right.
We lunched at Flore Vegan Cuisine (3818 West Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles) and had a really good Rubin and Club Sandwich. I liked that area a lot. It was nice to poke around.
We also drove out to Malibu to meet up with Amy and her husband. I think we met via Twitter, and this was the first time we met face to face. A bit nerve wracking for a social weirdo like myself. The food was good and so was the conversation and the view. Then we drove to meet some friends at a bar, and when we walked into the bar it was silent and everyone was staring at the TV.
Over the weekend we "climbed" a mountain and Sarah captured this great shot:
We also bumped into Simon Rex, I still don't know what he was doing....
We also got to hit up the Sunday Farmers Market, which was loaded with so many fruits and veggies, I almost needed to be dragged out of there.
Around the corner I found a book store dedicated to Design and Architecture. Let's just say, we were in there a while.
We also got to hang out with an old gradeschool friend of mine and I got to meet Joey's cousin, KC, which was so much fun!
To thank our friends for their hospitality, we commissioned a piece of work from Duane to express "You are the cats pajamas" and had it framed out in LA. I think Duane out did himself, because it was hard to part with this work of art.
So that really sums up our trip! Beautiful weather + great food + sunshine. We swam and ate and talked and it was perfect to pop away from NY for a moment.
Do you know any great places in LA we should visit next time? We are all about design stores next time!
