10 Questions with Orlando Soria

Oh, happy day lovies! I am so excited about today's "10 Questions With..."! You probably recognize this handsome fella from Secrets from a Stylist! What you probably don't know is that Orlando is way more entertaining than HGTV will allow for. Over the past six months this man has made me laugh so much, I thought it only fair you get in on the giggles and start reading his blog too. HommeMaker.com is packed with both pretty pictures and humorous chatter. Before you pop over there, get a taste below!

1. What's Your Name and URL: Orlando Soria, Hommemaker.com

2. When did you start blogging? What drove you to blog?: I started blogging in 2007 when I worked as a graphic designer. Because I was an entry-level designer, I had no creative control over what I was creating. Blogging was something I did completely for myself, where I could maintain creative control.

3. What has been your favorite post?: I did a post about gay pool parties which was pretty hilarious and fun to write. Sometimes I go back and read it when I'm feeling bored and it makes me happy.

4. Where do you go to for inspiration? Dish blogs/stores/locations/etc: The most inspirational places in the world are art museums. I go to LACMA (LA County Museum of Art) on a regular basis and stare at the Richard Serra pieces, the Barbara Kruger's elevator installation, the Chris Burden streetlamps out front, etc. Like interior design, art is a form of expression. But unlike interior design, art isn't bogged down by practicality or useability. In designing spaces, art provides uninhibited visual inspiration.

5. Every dweller should: Fill their home with books and art. These two things make me happy because they provide endless information, entertainment, and beauty. They also provide perfect design elements because they don't just feel like random crapola sitting around. They have a useful function (which is to make life fun).

6. If you had unlimited funds you would buy: A huge art collection with work by Hedi Slimane, Yoshitomo Nara, and David Hockney.

7.Where would you buy a second home/rent a second apartment and why?: I have done my time in New York and probably will never live there full time again, but it's always been my dream to own a whole brownstone on either 21st or 22nd street between 9th and 10th avenues. I've lived in this part of the city and loved it. And the idea of living in one of those gorgeous old brownstones and having the whole thing to myself is the most extravagant and delightful fantasy.

8. What's your favorite piece of furniture in your home?: Right now I'm really into my bedside table, which is this old farmhouse piece with a lot of little drawers that I got a Wertz Brothers. It's one of the first things I see every morning and it's got a ton of age and character.

9. Your homes style is: Modern-Antique-Japanese-Grandpa-Rustic-Urban-Artist. I like everything, so my style kind of reflects that. I love paintings and photographs, but I also love furniture pieces with history, age and character. I don't like houses that look too themey, so my space tends to be an eclectic collection of stuff I love.

10. Three words to describe your personal taste: Fun, Found, Frugal.

It's back!!!!! 10 Questions With....

We use to do this thing back in the day. 10 questions with......fill in the blank. It was an excuse to get the goods on some fabulous bloggers we are inspired by. Then we got busy and dropped the whole thing. Over the past year I have been so lucky to meet so many amazing bloggers, I felt it time to bring 10 Q's back. We re-start with Roeshel from The DIY Showoff. A sweetheart I met in Indiana at the Delta Offices during a blogger event. Totally love this lady. You will too. Trust.

1. What's Your Name and URL:

2. When did you start blogging? What drove you to blog?:

I started blogging in 2007 to journal our home improvement projects. I loved having a place where I could write about the transformation and share before/after shots.

3. What has been your favorite post?

My favorite post is actually a page with our farmhouse tour that I update as we check projects off of our DIY list.

http://thediyshowoff.blogspot.com/p/farmhouse-tour.html

4. Where do you go to for inspiration? Dish blogs/stores/locations/etc:

I find my inspiration in catalogs, my favorite magazines (Country Living, BHG, House Beautiful) and online:  Pinterest, Houzz and other DIY bloggers.

5. Every dweller should:

Do what they love.

6. If you had unlimited funds you would buy:

New high end kitchen appliances. My husband tolerates my DIY and projects and gives me mostly free reign when it comes to design. He does the cooking so if we had unlimited funds, I'd love to surprise him with a stand alone refrigerator and stand alone freezer - his dream.

7.Where would you buy a second home and why?:

When we pay off our current mortgage, we'll be buying a house in Florida. I hate snow. I loathe cold. I have some family there and we try to visit at least once a year now, but as we near retirement, we'd love to stay more often for longer periods of time (did I mention I hate snow and cold?).

8. What's your favorite piece of furniture in your home?
Right now it's my reclaimed barnwood dining room table. I love it's natural beauty and bulk.

9. Your homes style is:

One word? Eclectic. I love farmhouse, vintage, rustic, modern country, French inspired. Our house is a design mutt but I do what we love and it reflects our comfortable style.

10. Three words to describe your personal taste:

I like for things to be 1) organized, 2) personal - to have meaning or to reflect things I love and 3) thrifty - We're always on a budget and I love that DIY projects and thrifty tricks help us achieve making a room transformation happen with beautiful results.

Thanks so much Roeshel! Thanks for running such an awesome blog packed with inspiration!

10 Questions With Mr. and Mrs. {AKA}Design

It's always excited to see other couples tackle home ownership, and the discovery of design and what works for them. Not too long ago I discovered Shannon and Dean's Blog , and was impressed with how swift the action was when buying a new home. They started gutting and getting to business in only six days! Read the interview below and let us know what you think of AKA Design! We are super excited ot have them visit!
1. What's Your Name and URL: My name is Shannon and my hubby's name is Dean. We've been happily-ever-after-married for almost fifteen years and counting. We have three beautiful children and one fur baby. Our blog is {aka}|design www.akadesign.ca.

2. When did you start blogging? What drove you in the cheap and chic design?: We just started blogging this summer. When we bought our war era (read: OLD) bungalow late last year a dear friend suggested we start a blog. But things were so hectic with our renovations that we just posted pics on facebook for awhile. This summer when we had time to slow down a breathe (although only briefly) we started the blog, initally to catch our family up on what we'd been up to. Pretty quickly though we realized that it would be great to tie in our home decorating and organizing business and to offer up some great diy projects and tips and ideas for other do-it-yourselfers. As for cheap and chic design, we've lived on essentially one income since our first child was born over ten years ago. If I didn't look for cheap, there would be no chic!

3. What has been your favorite post?: I think my favourite post would have to be our Pink and Green Girls' Room Redo Reveal. It was such a fun project and I couldn't wait to show our friends and family. I am a girly-girl at heart, so making the room pretty for our two girls was a total blast! And the huge response to our fabric art post surprised me. Our readers loved it, yet it seemed like such a simple project.

4. Where do you go to for inspiration?: I have several blogs that I check almost daily (see the section on our site called Blogs We Heart) for inspiration. Also I love shelter mags like House and Home and Style at Home, stores like Pottery Barn, Bouclair, Ikea and Homesense. Oh and nothing beats google search for images. You can find almost anything for home decor inspiration on google. Want ideas for a front entry way, search for front entry. What about starburst mirrors? Search google images. It's amazing really.

5. Every artist should: Every artist should make time to create. This can be really tough because life just naturally fills up time. But it is so important.

6. If you had unlimited funds you would buy: I hate to admit it, but my want list is huge. It's embarassing, really. I am truly totally happy with what I have, but there is always something pretty that catches my eye. I have no idea what I'd choose first. But I think if I had unlimited funds, I'd finish my entire house and yard top to bottom, every single inch all at once.

7.Where would you buy a second home and why?: Do you mean like a weekend house or cottage? Definitely in Muskoka. Right on a gorgeous lake with a view of the rocks and trees. I spent my teen years living up there and although I love the city for living in, I adore Muskoka for holidays. It's just so peaceful and relaxing.

8. What's your favorite piece of furniture in your home?: I like the versatility and durability of our black leather sofa and chair. They make a great backdrop for any colour scheme and they are perfect for messy little hands. I tend to like change (if you could see all the hair do's I've had...), so the fact that I can switch up throw pillows and even artwork around the sofa and chair is so much fun.

9. Your homes style is: Hmmm. Good question. O-l-d. Lol. Just kidding. Simple and organized. I love pretty things, really I do. But most of our house and it's contents have a purpose. One set of dishes, one set of glasses, enough seating for our family and guests, throw pillows that get, well, thrown...and sat on and left on the floor. We have a busy house and family and while nice to look at (on most days), our home has to be durable and functional too.

10. Three words to describe your personal taste: Pretty. Comfortable. Simple.
