To Paint is to DIY + Giveaway!

***This giveaway is now closed!***

Lovelies! How good to see you! Welcome to day #2 of our top five favorites when it comes to making our/your house a home, the DIY way! We use to not like to paint. It was a long and painful process. Then after a few rooms we started to figure out tricks and tools to make it go quicker. Things to make it look better. Things to not ruin everything surrounding us. Eventually we got a little adventurous and even started to stencil full walls.

So let's talk what makes a good paint job. We never used a drop cloth. Ever. Until I noticed tiny little paint dots on our 80+ year old floors. They were a killer to "pick" off the floor. Enter the canvas drop cloth. I love canvas so much, I almost want to make curtains out of them. Purdy is our brush of choice because you never get any strays with them and they tend to last longer than other brands we have tried. As you probably already know we love our Scotch 3M tape, I almost feels it's part of the decor sometimes. If you peel it just before the paint dries, you get a perfect line every time! Now for the major moments, Shur-Line makes awesome rollers. Remember this mess? I think we bought every Shur-Line roller and Scotch Blue at True Value.

We thought for day #2 of our awesome giveaway week courtesy of Stack Exchange, we would doll out a sweet painting kit to a lucky reader! Everything you need but the paint to get your next room done line a pro! How do you get a smooth finish when painting trim? Click here to see what's a buzz about this question and other about painting perfect rooms and DIY in general.

the prep! seems to take forever and sucks all motivation out of the project.

I hate the time involved and that if you rush it tends to look messy. Arts and crafts now that kind of painting is fun! But walls?! No thank you! Of course I'm willing to give it another try if I win :)

Cleaning in prep and post is the worst!

edging the ceiling! I hate standing on the ladder in the first place, and our ceiling is textured with no molding, so I can't tape it off. I edge the ceiling by hand and have to spend way too long on the top of the ladder

Washing the brushes is no fun, but sanding is the absolute worst. Hate how the dust gets everywhere.

September 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterElizabeth

I hate poor quality brushes that leave bristles behind.

The thing I hate most about painting is all the prep work! I hate taping and cutting...it takes too long!

September 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMeg

It seems like no matter how hard I try, I always get some paint where I don't want it...like on my freshly painted ceiling or trim and then I have to go back in and do touch-ups!

The cleanup! Ugh! The prep isn't a buncha fun either, but the cleanup is a real chore. But quality brushes make a difference and a painter's comb works wonders!

i love painting... but i hate.. hate.. hate the cleanup. i hate rinsing the brushes and rollers.. when i am done i just want to enjoy the new beauty.. not clean everything! :)

I hate painting the trim! Ugh.

I don't think there is anything I like about painting. I can't even use a marker without getting it all over me!

I hate cleaning up. It's all fun getting started, seeing the change, but then there is just as much work cleaning up the area, brushes, etc. and by that time I'm over the project or tired

Ceilings are the worst part of painting! No matter what I do, I always seem to get paint all over my hair.

October 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSylvia

The one thing I dislike most about painting is the paint in my hair. It takes a week to get finally get the paint out of my hair.

October 3, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCindy

I just do not have the patience for the detail work. I especially hate avoiding the ceiling. argh!

October 3, 2011 | Unregistered Commenternicoleab

I find painting very relaxing. I just hate the cleaning, and the actual paying for the paint.

October 3, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterPedro

I dislike the most when the color isn't just right. I don't mind repainting if I'm not happy but sometimes I feel like the color system could be a little more precise!

October 3, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterVictoria

I hate when the excitement of finishing a job is ruined by seeing a spot that needs an extra coat... after all the paint stuff is cleaned up and put away!

October 3, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterErin H.

Ugh, I hate the prep work! I just want to get right to getting that paint on the walls or furniture!

October 3, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJulie

I hate all the prep work!

October 3, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMichelle

For some strange reason.. maybe paint fumes.. I enjoy painting.. which is good cause the wife seems to change the Living Room color every year!

October 3, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNate

Ah, the cleanup and previously, since there's low VOC widely available now, the lasting fumes and smell.
