To Paint is to DIY + Giveaway!

***This giveaway is now closed!***

Lovelies! How good to see you! Welcome to day #2 of our top five favorites when it comes to making our/your house a home, the DIY way! We use to not like to paint. It was a long and painful process. Then after a few rooms we started to figure out tricks and tools to make it go quicker. Things to make it look better. Things to not ruin everything surrounding us. Eventually we got a little adventurous and even started to stencil full walls.

So let's talk what makes a good paint job. We never used a drop cloth. Ever. Until I noticed tiny little paint dots on our 80+ year old floors. They were a killer to "pick" off the floor. Enter the canvas drop cloth. I love canvas so much, I almost want to make curtains out of them. Purdy is our brush of choice because you never get any strays with them and they tend to last longer than other brands we have tried. As you probably already know we love our Scotch 3M tape, I almost feels it's part of the decor sometimes. If you peel it just before the paint dries, you get a perfect line every time! Now for the major moments, Shur-Line makes awesome rollers. Remember this mess? I think we bought every Shur-Line roller and Scotch Blue at True Value.

We thought for day #2 of our awesome giveaway week courtesy of Stack Exchange, we would doll out a sweet painting kit to a lucky reader! Everything you need but the paint to get your next room done line a pro! How do you get a smooth finish when painting trim? Click here to see what's a buzz about this question and other about painting perfect rooms and DIY in general.

The thing I dislike most about painting is prep. I love the way the tape works, but it takes so long to put it all up!

My least favorite part about painting is the cleanup!

I dislike rinsing brushes. Most of the time I just let them dry up and go to waste. :/

I hate when you accidentally drip paint on a spot where you don't want paint!

I hate cleaning up the brushes and rollers, so much so that we no longer clean up rollers, just use them once and throw them away!

I hate the cleanup!!

I strongly dislike washing brushes. I love the finished product though. :)

I followed @StackDIY...

I hate prepping my painting projects!! The quicker I can get my hands, er, brush in the paint the better!

September 27, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCourtney Nelson

I dislike all the prep work s well (cleaning out the room, taping, patching..ugh) Its the pits! however, the fun part for me is taking the tape down!

September 27, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterHeather

I'm joining the "prep sucks" bandwagon. It's the pits.

I hate when you realize you missed a drip, and it's already dried! Sanding down the area to re-do it is a downer!
Thanks for all of the tips you share!

I don't mind painting, but the prep work is awful!

I HATE cutting in! It's so tedious. But I love the way a new color looks on a wall so that makes it worth it :)

The worst part is the clean up!

I'm also following @stackDIY on twitter now too.

Finishing the paint job, only to find a drip running down the wall.

September 27, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBrandon

I hate the details and actually finishing it. I start off strong and get lazy towards the end.

I think the worst part of painting is the cutting in around the perimeter. I am a bit of a perfectionist, and I just drive myself insane if the line isn't perfectly straight. It takes me just as long to tape off a room 'perfectly' as it does to try and keep my hand steady and free hand it all.

September 27, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMercedes

My husband and I just bought our first house so I have been doing lots and lots of painting and know my answer: cutting in the edges, especially in old houses where there are no straight lines! I never use tape so that could be part of the reason for my disdain :)

September 27, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSara WW

I hate touchups! I might have missed the class in kindergarten that talked about staying in the lines. I'm not so good at that.

The thing I hate most about painting is gearing up for it... I get so nervous!

September 27, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKelli

I think for me it's a tie between prep work (I hate to tape!) or the mess! No matter how many cloths we drop we always seem to stain a little peice of our floor :(
