TRUE VALUE BLOG SQUAD CHALLANGE: HOW TO MAKE A SCREEN DOOR - NOT A BORE! PART 2

It's been clear to us we keep many projects running at one time. We could have potentially finished the screen door a few weeks back, for sure, but you know how we love to sit on things and L-O-V-E them before we finalize it. Let's just say, we L-O-V-E how the door turned out!

This was indeed a labor of love. Our dear friend Duane, sketched out the design, Joey routed it, together we painted it and weatherproofed it with Minwax, spray polyurethane, from our local True Value store (all the products were found at our local True Value Stores, including a True Value lumber yard). The white and darker blue (Royal from Krylon spray paint) is one solid piece of wood cut to size. The light blue scalloped edge was hand painted with True Value brand paint sweetly names Haily's Heart in a 4 oz. sample tub. Here is how we attached the scalloped edge with a seamless look:

Joey sized some little white nails by cutting them in almost half to keep the edge nice and stable. We decided to keep the inside of the door pure white, to compliment the mudrooms serine feeling. It also makes it feel more cohesive and adds a bit of a surprise when you walk outside.

We can't wait to fix up the backyard entrance and add a new light, some plants, and refinish the stairs and outside of the mudroom. We know this was made to be the Au pair's entrance, and most people would not focus on making it a beautiful space, but I can't help it. It just so happens when you walk out that door you are faced with a raised garden about three feet off the ground. The bushes are wild now and grow raspberries amongst many other things - but picture wild flowers, veggies, and fruits - right outside your kitchen!

So here she is in all her glory, both the inside and the outside view. We have A LOT of work to do out the outside of the mudroom! for such a tiny space it houses French doors, a sliding screen door and the door displaying the new screen door finishing.

We would love to know your thoughts! Have you made a bold piece situated on the outside of your home? We would love for you to share your quirky projects with us!

Lets get legal: We were one of the 10 bloggers True Value has chosen to work on The Blog Squad , and we are way excited to take on the challenge of showing you exciting DIY projects.  They have compensated us for our time and writing, and provided materials for the projects we have worked on. However, our opinions are entirely our own and we have not been paid to publish positive comments. Did we mention we are excited to show you our DIY Blog Squad Projects?

Animal Attraction: Quickie Project

We love some good animal decor. Notice the word "good", emphasized. In a recent episode of the Nate Show, a woman was obsessed with bunny decor, and Emily Henderson (Design Star Winner) saved the day by mellowing out the bunny infestation, and toned down the room to a more tasteful space. Joey thinks we are going the route of overly obsessed with animal decor, but somehow I got him on board with this simple project.

While visiting Brooklyn, we popped into one of our favorite store, Moon River Chattel, and ran around like little children, until we found ourselves in the children section ironically. While inspecting the amazing selection of hand crafted looking toys (yes, we buy stuff for our non-existent child), we notices these little plastic beasts and were brought back to our childhood. "Wouldn't these make great hooks." I said. "Yea, we can cut them in half and mount them to something." Joey replied.

So, we adopted our new friends, gave them a new home, then cut them in half. Though our original intent was to use them as hooks to hand the dogs' leashes, and sweaters, I liked the box Joey made to house them in - and use them as art in my office instead.

Easy peasy. All you need is some wood, paint, glue, and plastic animals to make this happen. We totally plan on popping this in the 'ol kids room one day. Do you have a cheap project you have done? Please share! We would love to know how it turned out!

A update about updates

There is a lot going on here in the land of MAHAH (Make a House a Home, doh!). Don't you love that? Ma-HaH! It sounds like the noise you make when you discover something while simultaneously snorting. Here is our current queue of pending projects you can look forward to reading all about in the near future:

Joey, Duane, and I are building a killer screen door. We have selected the colors:

A new post about how it turned out, how to weatherproof it, and hang it will be coming up next week! So excited about this one!

That pesky reupholstered chair - we will be posting soon, we had d-r-a-m-a with a tiny part of it...We can't post a "how-to" until we nail it down. But if you want a peek, enjoy:

Those Ikea buit-in's we were cloning from the oh-so-inventive Sherry and John over at Young House Love - It didn't quite work out - and we'll be sharing why! We will also have a full how-to build your own from scratch!

Not to mention LOADS MORE!, Like I said, we have been busy. Especially after discovering the Lumber Yard True Value has in the Bronx. There is a lot of problem solving going on as well. The amazing moose head, doesn't quite fit - so we are trying to relocate or figure out the antlers. So between the built-in's, the chair and the moose head - we are are backtracking as we move forward with actual design - yay!

If you didn't have a chance to check out our 10 Questions With...with fellow True Value Blog Squadder, Centsational Girl - pop over to the post and check it out. It was an intense pleasure meeting her, and I know you will love her perky personality and amazing projects.
